"Fresh produce is the hardest thing for non-profits to get their hands on," Claire Thomas said.

That's why she founded Farms for Life in 2009, an all-volunteer non-profit organization based in Redmond that bridges the gap between local farmers and people in need of healthy food.

"People that farm - especially organic farmers - are dedicated to a love of the environment, and being of service to people," she said. "The idea that they can do even more to help is extremely appealing to them."

Farms for Life buys fresh fruits and vegetables directly from local organic farms at a reduced price and delivers the produce to YouthCare, New Beginnings, Elizabeth Gregory Home, Orion Center, and local food banks at no cost.

"It's always been a concern of mine to be able to distribute to people who need food," Thomas said. "There's a direct correlation between a poor diet and disease - and also addiction recovery."

And now a generous grant will make it possible for Farms for Life to distribute even more food. United Way of King County recently awarded Farms for Life $10,500 to turn a giant shipping container into a refrigerated produce cooler, and also provide the means for power supply.

"The United Way grant fits right in with what we need right now," Thomas said, "it will help us grow."

Thomas said the cooler will allow them to store produce for a day or two, so the stock doesn't go bad. The more stock they build, the more people they can help.

And that's really what it's all about.

"I'll never forget the first delivery we made to YouthCare," Thomas recalled. "We unloaded the van and all of a sudden these kids started coming outside. They were so excited...all over fresh produce."
