Be prepared this winter
Whether disaster leaves you without electricity, gas, running water, phone service or more, you can prepare with just a few simple steps today.
The city recommends you stock your home with water and food, first aid, clothing and bedding, tools, and any special items. Keep the items you will most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry container such as a large, covered trash container, camping backpack or duffel bag.
Keep a smaller version of the kit in your car and at work. For longer term, you should be prepared to purify water. Store at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, as well as one gallon of water per person per day. Select foods that require no refrigeration, cooking or preparation, that are compact and lightweight and rotate the food supply every 6 months, paying attention to expiration dates.
The city also recommends you keep two first aid kits, one for your home and one for your car.
