13 Redmond High students face drug charges in sting

Thirteen students at Redmond High School are facing drug charges after a long-running undercover operation involving a police officer posing as a student.

Court documents filed in the case say the students, ages 16 and 17, allegedly sold a variety of illegal drugs to the undercover officer, including ecstasy, cocaine, heroin and marijuana.

If convicted, the students face up to 36 weeks in juvenile detention.

The undercover officer enrolled at Redmond High School in August 2009, posing as a senior transfer student from California.

In the months following, she attended classes, ate lunch at the school and lived as a high school student. As she gained the trust of fellow classmates, she learned that some were selling drugs.

Charging documents describe the officer buying 10 ecstasy pills from a 16-year-old girl one day and 3 1/2 grams of cocaine one month later.

Other students later sold the officer ecstasy, cocaine, black tar heroin and marijuana, according to court documents.

The drug buys took place in a variety of locations, including the Redmond High School parking lot, an apartment complex parking lot, and even in the produce section of a grocery store.

Some Redmond High students told KOMO News they were shocked to learn the undercover officer had pretended to be one of them for six months.

And at least one student said she felt the 13 arrests painted a false portrait of the high school, home of the Mustangs.

"It's a great school, and they basically degraded our school by showing people that kids at our school would actually do something like that," said the student, who requested anonymity.

The students were arrested in a sting earlier this year, but charges weren't filed until this week because the investigation was ongoing, said a Redmond police spokesperson.

KOMO News is withholding the students' names because they are juveniles.
